Description and formulas for calculating a spherical segment
A spherical segment (also spherical section) is a part of a sphere, which is separated by the cut with a plane.
A spherical segment has the shape of a dome and has a circular disk as its base. A hemisphere is a special case of a spherical segment in which the cut through the center of the sphere divides it into two equal halves. The curved part of the surface of a spherical segment is called the spherical cap.
The segment of a sphere is determined by the radius r, its height h and the segment radius a.
In all formulas − is to be taken at ± if the spherical section is less than half the size of the sphere, otherwise + at ±.
